Those Who Wanted Jonathan Out Sponsored Bandits —Mailafia

Image
A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, says many of the bandits terrorising the country were sponsored by persons who wanted to push former President Goodluck Jonathan out of power at all cost. Mailafia said this during an interview with  The PUNCH  on Thursday. He said, “During the 2015 elections they brought in thousands of foreigners into this country, armed them because it was a case of if Goodluck Jonathan doesn’t surrender, there will be war. They were ready for civil war; they were not ready for peace. “Of course, Jonathan handed over to them and then they turned their backs on the hoodlums and the hoodlums said ‘look, you brought us here and we are still here’.” Mailafia, who was the Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the last election, said he was also convinced that some foreign powers were behind the bandits. “There are certain world powers that want to destroy our country. Nine days ago, bandits breached a high school in Niger State and seized about 29 students and school administrators. National security sources informed Peoples Gazette that the federal government paid $2.099 million (N800 million) as ransom, but the students and their teachers were not released after Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello caught wind of the arrangement and instigated a cordoning of the vast forest where the students and their abductors have been held up. A spokesman for the police in Zamfara did not immediately return ...

The forest borders Sabon Gari in Sokoto, and Shinkafi and Maradun in Zamfara. Sububu also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to personally visit them for a conversation. You have asked for armistice, an agreement was reached but you left that person in a forest with a gun and nothing to substitute. “What do you expect? How do you want that person to survive? All the promises made to us, none of it was fulfilled. “Enrol the young ones in school…we should be treated the same way. Give them jobs with the government, put them in schools. “The President should personally come and preside over the talks. When he was campaigning, he traveled all over, why would he not do it n...

Negotiating With Bandits Is Not The Best - Abdulsalami Abubakar

Image
Former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has said having dialogues bandits is not the best option to combat banditry in the country. He said this when a delegation of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum paid him a visit at his residence in Minna, the Niger State capital, on Wednesday. Abdulsalami, however, said that the government would not have a choice in negotiating with bandits to secure the release of pupils and others kidnapped from the Government Science College, in Kagara. He also urged the government to consider all likely alternatives to get the victims freed. “Dialogue is not the best way but when you are the one wearing the shoe, what will you do? Our children have been abducted for over five days, even if you know where they are, it will be foolhardy to storm there and fight them because there may be casualties. “Sometimes there is a need to see the best way you can talk to these heartless people to see how you can get these people released. I Have Not Returned To APC - Atiku’s daughter, Fatima

Image
Daughter of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Dr. Fatima Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims in some sections of the media that she participated in the ongoing membership revalidation exercise of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. In a statement she personally signed and made available to newsmen, Wednesday, Dr. Fatima said her membership of the APC in the past was informed by the need to participate in then APC-led government of Umaru Bindo in Adamawa state as a commissioner. “Contrary to media reports, I did not revalidate my membership of the APC. “In 2015 when I was appointed as commissioner of Health in Adamawa State, I had to join the ruling party in my state. It was a requirement for the opportunity to serve. “Since the conclusion of my duty tour as commissioner, I am now into private practice, with no affiliation to any political party. “I was, however, taken aback to read of my purported revalidation of APC membership. “For the avoidance of doubt, I di...

Don’t Blame Fulani Herdsmen Alone, Farmers Also Carry AK-47s For Self Defence – Plateau Governor, Lalong

Image
The Governor of Plateau State and Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Simon Lalong, has said Fulani herdsmen alone should not be blamed for carrying AK-47s as farmers are also guilty of the same offence. According to him, when the farmers-herdsmen crisis occurred in Plateau State, both herdsmen and farmers were arrested with AK-47s.  He said, “I am not justifying anybody carrying AK-47 but don’t forget in the cause of our deliberations and investigations, it was not only Fulanis that were carrying AK-47, but even farmers are also carrying AK-47.  “Farmers are also carrying AK-47 because when you talk about them, it is just a proliferation of arms with respect to guiding and everybody trying to protect himself. We shouldn’t allow people to have self-help. When they talk about AK-47, I have not seen anybody talk about that. “But at the time there were farmers-herdsmen clashes here, we arrested people. Farmers were holding AK-47 and the herdsmen were also holdi...

Fulani Herdsmen Are Not Enjoying National ‘Cake' - Sheikh Gumi

Image
Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has doubled down on his claim that Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria are demonised and have taken to violent crimes and kidnapping for ransom because they have not benefitted from the country’s fabled national ‘cake.’ He also insisted on his call for amnesty. On Monday, Mr. Gumi on  Channels TV insisted that the herdsmen were victims of the insecurity that has engulfed many parts of the North and some parts of the South.  “You see what happened in Oyo, his (Fulani herdsman) hut burnt down. Who is burning down his hut? It is somebody coming from a building; somebody coming from a car. He (Fulani herdsman) doesn’t own a car. He doesn’t own a building. He doesn’t enjoy anything of the Nigerian cake,” Mr. Gumi argued. Regarding the amnesty, the cleric said, “Amnesty comes with a package – all victims should be looked at, and the government should compensate because actually, it’s the responsibility of the government to protect people, their l...

Even In Developed Countries, Schoolchildren Are Kidnapped, Not Only In Nigeria - Lai Mohammed

Image
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has waved aside the rising waves of schoolchildren abduction under President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime. “Even in the most developed countries in the world, school kidnappings take place,” Mr. Mohammed said in an interview on  Channels Television . Media reports and anecdotes showed Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, had witnessed more kidnaps, especially of students under Mr. Buhari’s regime, than at any other time. Mr. Buhari, a former military leader who overthrew a democratically-elected government in 1983, had claimed during his campaign seeking to be Nigeria’s president that he had become a democrat. However, his critics have described him as dour, aloof, nepotistic, and dictatorial. He, his party (the  All Progressives Congress ), and sympathisers have repeatedly denied the allegations. He rose to power in 2015 on the wave of ability to tackle insecurity and corruption in the country successfully. To...

Fulani are treated unfairly in Nigeria —Ex Bauchi Governor Isa Yuguda

Image
A former Bauchi State governor, Isa Yuguda, has stated that Nigeria has treated Fulani people unfairly, stating that for the herdsmen crisis across the country to be addressed, justice must be given to them. He stated this in an interview with journalists shortly after his revalidation as a member of the All Progressives Congress, on Monday, at the Destination Bauchi Hotel. Yuguda, a former Minister of Aviation and two-term governor of Bauchi state from 2007-2015, accused past governments in the country of creating banditry by their refusal to address the plight of herders whose cattle routes have been taken. He said that despite the contributions of the Fulani to the economy, they are still being treated unfairly. According to him, if the government could release huge sums of money as subsidies in agriculture, why can’t the government subsidise pastoralism? “Most importantly, the neglect of the Fulani especially the cattle rearers who are presently giving Nigeria a minimum...
